Asheville Bears

What is a Bear Trap?

Bear traps are made of steel ‘jaws’, that trap the animal when it steps on the trigger, in an attempt to keep the animal from escaping. Traps are designed to continue to tighten on the animal the more the animal attempts to escape. This is why you see our bears missing limbs, as they have been fortunate enough to wriggle free, losing a limb in the process. Many retail stores, as well as Amazon are where trappers legally buy traps that are illegal to use for bear trapping. These same traps are what caused the missing limb injuries to Asheville’s bears.

We are currently offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction or halting of any persons bear trapping, poaching, or participating in the sales of illegal bear parts. Rewards are valid in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.
